While we post things from across the hockey world (because we’re hockey fans), I think most of the people who follow this Tumblr, know that we’re Canucks fans over here. So, the news that Pavol Demitra was among the passengers who passed away on the Lokomotiv flight is something that jumped out at me.
With that said, he always seemed happiest, and, unsurprisingly, also at his best when he was representing his country. So, this will always stick out to me as my favourite Demitra moment, with his hands aloft waiting to celebrate with Team Slovakia after scoring an absolute beauty in the 7th round of the shootout to upset Russia at the 2010 Olympics. He entered the tournament as someone widely thought to have left his best days behind him… and outscored the likes of Crosby, Parise, Hossa, and Toews to lead the entire tournament with 10-points.
Rest in peace.

Posted Sports: Russian plane carrying KHL’s Lokomotiv crashes, at least 36 dead

The hockey community suffered another significant loss Wednesday in what has already been a tragic summer. According to the Associated Press, 36 people are dead and one is critically injured after the plane carrying the KHL’s Lokomotiv crashed while taking off in Yaroslavl, Russia.

What an unbelievably terrible off-season.

Derek Boogaard - June 23, 1982 – May 13, 2011

From Hockey Wilderness:

Derek Boogaard was one of the most well-loved players in the brief history of the Minnesota Wild. The impact he had on this community reached far outside the boards of the Xcel Energy Center ice. Sure, he was a tough guy on the ice, but Boogaard’s 24 jersey was one of the best selling in the NHL, covering the backs of hockey fans young and old. In his charitable works, Boogaard reached out to those who asked, any and all. He supported kids stricken by terminal diseases at Children’s Hospital, gave money ,hockey equipment, time and visibility to the families of our country’s armed forces.

By all accounts, an absolute gem of a human being off the ice and, as evidenced by the video above, where he actually breaks Jody Shelley’s helmet with a punch, one of the baddest dudes to ever strap on skates, Derek Boogaard past away suddenly yesterday. Rest in peace, Boogy Man.
